Healthcare in the Netherlands is moving rapidly towards XML data exchange over the Internet. This presentation discussion the application of web services, and specifically SOAP and WSDL to a large, complex, real-life environment.

Gaat het nu eindelijk wat worden met Web Services? Na een over-hyped begin en een lange startfase beginnen echte implementaties te draaien, of staan op de rol. Ook komen lang ontbrekende standaarden voor beveiliging en betrouwbaarheid binnen bereik. Bij NICTIZ (Nationaal ICT Instituut in de Zorg) zijn standaarden opgesteld om in de zorgsector met behulp van web services te communiceren. In een tweetal artikelen wordt de huidige stand van zaken in kaart gebracht: eerst wordt, aan de hand van de NICTIZ-praktijkcasus, de basis van Web Services besproken: SOAP en WSDL.
In 1988 I graduated cum laude on a thesis in Philosophy. This is a translation of the original chapter 5, my own account of the reference of nouns. It has lead me to believe computers will never ever master language in any significant way unless they learn to perceive the outer world and interact with humans. Most of it is a rather straightforward translation of the 1988 work. A short look into my intellectual past for those interested.
Relational databases are great for storing structured data which conforms to a well-defined relational database schema. They are not so good at storing information that does not conform to such a schema. Topic Maps provide a very flexible and robust way to add arbitrary data to a relational databases at runtime.

Article based on my presentation given at XML Europe 2002. Topic Maps are an excellent vehicle to store the information in B2B-mappings for reuse. This are 'Business Maps': portable, reusable mappings. The article contains some Topic Map fragments in XTM. See also "What is 'is'?" beneath.
Presentation given at XML 2001 in Orlando, Florida on interoperability between B2B-vocabularies. The presentation starts with a philosophical introduction on reference, based on the work of Frege and Wittgenstein. Next the consequences on IT are sketched and current approaches to B2B interoperability. Finally I make a proposal for an improvement: we need to store the knowledge in mappings for later reuse.
